"Through software engineering, we promote the growth of
people and companies, and accelerate the development of Japan."

Anti-Pattern is looking for people to join us and work together.

Philosophy

Bringing Japanese software engineers to their most aspirational profession

  • Core Value or "Jin" (仁) - Work as Play

We believe that engaging in our work with a positive outlook, acting rather than merely feeling that we are "working", is what leads to truly creative endeavors. Some may also relate to this value through the words of Takasugi Shinsaku: "Make an uninteresting world interesting," a way of thinking about how to make work itself enjoyable.

  • Core Value or "Jin" (仁) - Trust

Accomplishing anything meaningful requires building relationships with many stakeholders, and trust is the premise for any group to act together. Through genuine partnership, trusting one another and being trusted in return, we can lower the costs that inevitably arise in groups without trust, and act with greater agility. That said, because people are fallible, our systems must never rely on blind, unguarded trust. In most cases, building a one-to-one trust relationship takes time, accumulated through consistent actions, and we need to keep that in mind. Within a group, trust can also be passed along: if a person you trust in turn trusts someone else, that trust can extend to them as well, so once an individual has earned a certain level of trust, connections with others can sometimes form quickly without much time. Whatever the situation, what matters most is to value courtesy first, act with respect toward others, and build relationships in which trust can be exchanged.

  • Core Value or "Jin" (仁) - Equality

In the world we aim to realize, we want a natural "hierarchy" or "difference" to emerge, one rooted in fairness, where people with real ability are properly recognized and rewarded. In that process we require true equality: no discrimination based on race or other such factors, and no evaluation driven solely by political motives. Equality does not mean sameness; it means a state in which, in the pursuit of fairness, we can each acknowledge and accept that we are different from one another.

  • Code of Conduct or "Rei" (礼) - Ownership

On the path to realizing our philosophy, policies may change overnight and areas of responsibility can become unclear. This guideline exists so that, even so, each of us is able to take the action needed to get something done, or to optimize for the team as a whole.

  • Code of Conduct or "Rei" (礼) - Keep Learning

The world keeps changing, and we ourselves are the ones bringing about that change. Amid this, it is essential that we, too, keep changing and adapting. As the philosopher Chiba Masaya put it, "to study is to destroy oneself," and as Yoro Takeshi said, "to know is to change oneself", this is an especially important guideline for living out "Work as Play." Recruit founder Ezoe Hiromasa once said, "Create your own opportunities, and change yourself." Considering all of this, what is asked of us first is to change ourselves.

  • Code of Conduct or "Rei" (礼) - Keep Building Products Worth Loving

Love is precious, but it also demands constant effort. We aim to transform the world through our products, and to stay honest with those products and the users behind them, we need to keep building, and keep delivering, products worth loving.

  • Code of Conduct or "Rei" (礼) - Maintain Transparency

Scrum's three pillars are "transparency, inspection, and adaptation." It all starts with transparency: making things visible drives kaizen, keeps the organization healthy, and reduces risk. That said, this does not mean every piece of information must always be open. Some things, such as HR information and personal privacy, clearly need to stay confidential. Information that is still in an early, unexamined stage and risks being misunderstood also needs to be handled carefully, though there may still be cases where we choose to share it openly, aware of that risk. What matters most is understanding that openness alone does not guarantee something is communicated correctly; sharing information requires being mindful of how the recipient will perceive it. While we recognize that most information is more effective when open, at minimum the people holding that information need to discuss among themselves how it should be handled. With that in mind, we must keep working to maintain transparency.

  • Code of Conduct or "Rei" (礼) - Team Over Individual

"If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together", an African proverb. Because we are pursuing a distant ideal, we act as a team. Being team-first means prioritizing the team's interests over any individual's.

  • Code of Conduct or "Rei" (礼) - 100x Speed

Turning our philosophy into reality requires thinking far beyond a simple extension of the present; at times, we have to be dreamers. It is important to think backward from the question: what would it take to achieve something at 100x speed? A related idea is "conceive optimistically on a grand scale, plan pessimistically, and execute optimistically", one of the management philosophies of Inamori Kazuo, founder of Kyocera and DDI (now part of KDDI). While thinking as a dreamer at 100x speed, we still need to look carefully and calmly at both our company and the external environment as we shape that vision into an actual business, and consider our next moves with sufficient care. Even after making a plan to realize that dream, we will encounter many real-world obstacles along the way. To keep pushing forward without breaking in those moments, we need the mindset of a bricklayer: someone who keeps dreaming, yet works honestly and steadily, one brick at a time.

  • Code of Conduct or "Rei" (礼) - When in Doubt, Take the Challenge

Realizing our philosophy means overcoming many obstacles, and that requires questioning precedent and taking on new challenges. But taking a challenge sometimes means trusting intuition over reason, which is what makes it hard. Anything that is already obvious to everyone can never become the kind of innovation that changes the world, and it can never be achieved overnight. Sustaining challenges over the long term requires building a habit of challenging ourselves, and learning from the failures that follow is a nuance closely tied to the very meaning of the name "Anti-Pattern."

  • Code of Conduct or "Rei" (礼) - Never Do Anything You Could Not Face Heaven For

This guideline states our ethics in the simplest terms. Phrased in the negative, it holds us to the strongest possible standard. "Heaven" reflects a Japanese religious sensibility here, and readers may just as well substitute the word "family."
